The Case of the Missing Christian Vote

Ever since the dawn of democracy in the early nineties one thing has always baffled me: how Christians make up about 80% of the South African population but a Christian party has never won at the polls. In fact only about 2% of this 80% have supported a Christian party like the ACDP. So what’s the story with the other 78% of Christians? Here are some possible explanations:

1. Millions of Christians in South Africa have been easily persuaded by a party’s brand and size and less concerned about the party’s manifesto. This is a great tragedy especially when we consider that the big-name parties like the ANC and DA have manifestos that oppose Christian values & biblical principles.

2. Christians vote for non-Christian parties because they fear for their future. We must admit then that the true motivation behind the Christian vote is fear - not faith. People’s insecurities will always manifest as the election draws near. They always choose the familiar and the safe at the expense of their faith. So generally Black Christians will vote ANC or IFP, White Christians will stick with the DA and so on. This is immaturity personified and it reflects the undone-ness of God’s church!

3. Many well-meaning born-again Christians subscribe to the idea that elections & voting is secular and not for mature Christians. They propose that the church should be separate from the state. The church should only pray. These Christians will not vote for a Christian party and may sometimes be hostile towards Christian parties.

4. A large portion of the 80% are made up of Zion Christians, the Shembe movement and other Afro-Christian ancestral movements. Generally these so-called Christians may have their allegiance with the ruling party. A Christian party is taboo for them.

5. A number of Christians have become disillusioned by the empty promises of political campaigns & the lack of service delivery. They are indifferent towards the elections because they feel it makes no difference. As God-fearing Christian, their disillusionment may also arise from the minority representation of the population with Christian parties

The Christian Vote is Important

It surprised me when I recently learned that about half of the adult members of most churches are not registered as voters. Most Christians are indifferent when it comes to the elections. Some within the church refrain from the election process because they believe it to be secular. They don't see the need to vote and feel that voting for a political party has nothing to do with Christ. Other Christians feel that the major political parties, like the ANC and the DA, are too liberal. They believe that these parties they do not adhere to biblical principles & values and are therefore undeserving of their vote.

To the Christian community, I can understand your indifference. Yet, in spite of this, consider that your indifference has permitted the wicked to rule. In the absence of your vote corruption prevails, abortion is legalized, homosexuals can marry, sexual sin is accepted, and family & moral values are prohibited. Christian, don't underestimate the power of your vote. Sidestep your vote and you allow sin to continue within society. God will hold you accountable for the state of your city and nation. So Christians, do not abdicate your responsibility in the next election in May this year. You must get to your nearest voting station on the weekend of the 5th & 6th of March and register to vote! It's your first step in the right direction.

A Change of Guard in the Dolphin Coast

Dan 2:21 "He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings..."

I believe that God is the One whom determines the time and seasons for every purpose under heaven. He determines when to remove kings & rulers, and when to raise-up kings & rulers. Kings & rulers are set over cities and nations - not neccesarily by the efforts of man; they are the sovereign acts of God.

I am standing under the banner of the ACDP by the leading of the Lord. He has led me into the ACDP. Therefore I am fully persuaded that this is the time and season for the ACDP to become a major voice in this nation.

Why would the Lord speak to me about the ACDP and get me involved with them through so many confirmations? It has to be for no other reason other than that He has placed an expiry date on the DA's season here in Ballito.

I witness to the fact that the ACDP is where the pulse of God is right now. Even in Ballito the Word of the Lord declares that there is a change in the seasons. The season of DA domination has come to an end. It is God who removes kings; and so the Lord Himself is moving the DA from centrestage.

We declare the Word of the Lord that God raises up a new king and ushers in a new season in Ballito & the Dolphin Coast. He has found a son after His own heart who will do His will and fulfil His purposes in this territory. Thus says the Lord: "It is your season, Nel Sewraj. It is your time, ACDP." Arise, Nel Sewraj, arise! Arise, ACDP, arise!

DA & ANC: Supporters of Sexual Immorality in SA!

My confession: From 1994 my vote has juggled from ACDP to DA to ANC for various reasons. However, as truth about the DA and ANC now surfaces, I find myself repenting. I will never vote for the DA or ANC again because they undermine everything we as Christians believe viz.

In the Unicity council in Cape Town, the DA (which includes many professing Christians) have supported an interim IDP document which includes "the promotion of alternative lifestyles."Also, together with the ANC, the DA refused to distance themselves from the proposed "sex tourism", and the creation of a "Red Light District"!

With the rampant crime (the Western Cape officially has 32 car thefts, 31 violent robberies and 9 murders every single day), with schoolgirls raped - even on Rondebosch Common, with escalating infections of HIV (AIDS), it seems incredible that the Unicity councillors could even be considering "promoting alternative lifestyles" and "sex tourism".

Such vices inevitably degrade and dehumanise, encourage promiscuity, increase the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and fuel other vices such as drug and alcohol abuse, pornography, gambling and gangsterism.
The Bible asks us to "Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts … let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never failing stream!" Amos 5:15, 24

Yet, even more disturbing is the fact that many of the councillors who voted in favour of the IDP and against adopting an ACDP motion for "the promotion of a family friendly environment", were Christians! Many of the Democratic Alliance (DA) councillors, who voted for the "sex tourism" and against the "family friendly" motion, campaigned in their elections with the pledge to uphold "family values" and "Christian principles"!

The ANC is a party that stands for legalised abortion, pornography, homosexuality, gambling and prostitution!

This is serious. The ANC & DA do not deserve the Christian vote.

The DA and ANC support abortion! How Tragic!

I love the Dolphin Coast not just for its beaches but also for the active Christian community that resides here. For example, for two years now the Christian community have publicly protested abortion. I agree that abortion is wrong because it denies the sanctity of human life. No civilized society permits one human to take the life of another human without punishment, and abortion is no different.

Did you know that most South Africans oppose abortion? This is a fact according to a survey done by the Human Sciences Research Council. Did you know that most political parties including the DA and ANC support legalized abortion?! This is a fact and I have records to prove it.

The ANC initiated and voted for the legalisation of abortion-on-demand saying: “We are committed to reducing levels of unexplained and unwanted pregnancy” (Parliament 1996). The DA also voted for the legalisation of abortion-on-demand saying: “It is the constitutional right of women to make choices about the very private matter of reproduction.” How sad that so many well meaning Christians still vote for the ANC and the DA.

One political party that vehemently opposes abortion is the ACDP. In parliament, the African Christian Democratic Party voted against the legalisation of abortion saying: “We believe that life begins in the womb and that unborn babies should be constitutionally protected... We deplore abortion as a grave evil and a national tragedy.”

To all the Christians in the Dolphin Coast: being part of an anti-abortion protest is noble. But then again, voting for a political party, like the DA & ANC, that supports abortion is tantamount to YOU being an accomplice to murder. So I call on Christians everywhere to start voting out of their convictions - and not out of party sentiments.
